As I did my routine morning swim around the island I could sense a big boat coming. Was it a Suzuki? A Yamaha Never mind! It was time for my welcoming duties as President of the Island Welcoming Committee to commence.
Men, women, coolers full of food and beer disembarked the boat for the pristine island that I call home.
It was just a matter of time before the turquoise water would mesmerize them and draw them my way.
When they did come towards the shallows as I approached wading through the waves I could see them step back apprehensively. I was joined by 2 friends Dusty & Sandy and as we waded through the shallows on the sand a few brave people stepped up and gave me a scratch on my back. Oh, what relief! I like making new friends; Afterall… that’s my job!
Later in the afternoon as they gathered in several smaller groups in the water we circled between groups and noticed they were becoming less apprehensive about us.
Gliding through the water and thinking I realized that Steve Erwin’s death really gave barbs a bad rap!
Just like with people.. not all rays are out to break your heart!
Dusty, Sandy and I glided under and around the dock for the island.. giving them just enough time to miss us before we casually checked in. A good hosts job is never done!
As their day of games and colleague bonding, beach BBQ and fun drew to an end some of them sat in the shallow waters off the beach sipping beer and laughing.
The Belikin beers must have been really nice because everyone relaxed a bit and Dusty, Sandy and I could sit in their laps, swim off and come back to get back scratches.
Rendezvous Caye’s pristine waters, sea breeze, great company and hospitable rays like us make for the perfect staff retreat!
Without a doubt entertaining and back scratches were the best part of our day. Of course Bobo, our boss, on the island would say that the delicious burgers and great music from DJ Dwight made his day!
As the sun began to set over the horizon, casting a golden glow on the tranquil waters of Rendezvous Caye, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the connections made and the memories created. Each visit brings new faces and stories, reminding me of the joy that comes from sharing this beautiful paradise with others. With laughter echoing in the air and the promise of future adventures, I eagerly await the next group to arrive, ready to welcome them with open fins and a warm heart.
